While international agencies continue to work to prevent further incidents and have been successful in disrupting terrorist activities before an attack occurs, the threat of terrorism remains constant as evidenced by a number of significant terrorist incidents across the globe since September 11, 2001. | 2008 | Niger | Two Canadian diplomats were kidnapped while they were returning from a visit to a gold mine operated by Canadian company in Niger. Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb claimed responsibility for the kidnapping. The diplomats were released in April 2009. |
| 2008 | Mumbai, India | In a coordinated attack terrorists using automatic weapons, grenades and improvised explosive devices attacked several locations throughout Mumbai. Two Canadians were killed and two were injured in the assault. |

| 2006 | Toronto, Canada | Members of a terrorist group who had initiated preparations for terrorist attacks, and were gathering bomb-making components were arrested in Toronto. Possible attack targets included Canada’s parliament buildings the CBC offices in Toronto and a military base. In 2010, the group’s leader is sentenced to life in prison, the maximum under Canada's anti-terrorism laws. Several of the remaining suspects were convicted of terrorism-related offences. |
